What’s in a Name?

Jonathan Murphy Name Change

2016 is already shaping up to be an exciting year! I am proud to announce that I am a member of SAG-AFTRA and couldn’t be happier about being part of the combined Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists:

We are actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, dj’s, news writers, news directors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists and other media professionals. Our work is seen and heard in theaters, on television and radio, sound recordings, the internet, games, mobile devices, home video: you see us and hear us on all media distribution platforms. We are the faces and the voices that entertain and inform America and the world.

I looking forward to adding my voice!

When you have two common names…Jonathan…Murphy, it stands to reason that there is someone already using that name professionally. Yes, there’s already a Jonathan Murphy, and he’s representing the name well and doing great work. So though I will always be Jonathan Murphy to friends and family, my new professional name is Jonathan Cormur. The last name is a mashup of part of my middle and last name so it has meaning and connection for me.

So like the rose, I hope that whatever you call me, I’ll be just as sweet. 😉

SimCity and the Improvising Simlish Audition

SimCity

My most difficult audition to date was for this newest release of SimCity. When my agent sent over the specifications, the production team wanted recordings of 11 character archetypes each with a range of moods–happy, neutral, angry and scared. And the kicker? It had to be in Simlish, an emotion-based language that does not include English or any foreign language words.

And…no script. Every line had to be improvised. But…I needed to include some Simlish words already established (There was a list attached).

I took my time. Learned some Simlish. Rehearsed. Wrote my own sentences in English, something each archetype would say and translated them into Simlish. Rehearsed. Then went into my home recording studio and went for it!

As with all auditions, you do your best, send it off and what will be, will be. Typically you find out pretty quick when you get cast but I think a month or so passed before my agent contacted me to say that I was one of the voice actors selected for the next SimCity.

Wobs! And yibs, yibs, jiboo! I exclaimed! Who’d of thought I’d have an unchie chance in hakibab to get it.

Enjoy the new release and when you’re havin’ a convo with someone in SimCity, you may just be talkin’ to me. Dag dag.  🙂

The Biz…Voicing Peekaboo, A Children’s Book App

Peekaboo by Bacciz

During the Thanksgiving holidays, I ventured into the children’s book app world and created the voice of “Bacci” the goofy, friendly dog. Bacci is the “navigator” who helps parents and children through the ins and outs of the entertaining and educational apps created by BacciZ.

The company has been has been featured in Apple’s Whats Hot, Staff Favorites, TUAW, The Mac Observer, many educational blogs, and in Gizmodo as “Best Apps for Kids.”

Yes, while everyone else was preparing turkey dinner (with all the fixings), I was in the studio recording!

My voice appears on the recently updated released of Peekaboo, Guess Who?

Peekaboo! App by BacciZ

The app is getting great reviews! “Peanut Butter & Whine” blogger Connie Gruning, even mentions the dog:

“There is a cute little dog that appears from time to time blow kisses, hum or even snore if you are taking too long or the player has suddenly left the room…. ummm hummmm.”

(insert blush 🙂 )

The Biz…An Invitation to a Major Cartoon Recording Session

I sat in on a recording of The Garfield Show featuring some of the industry’s most respected veteran voice actors. Here they were in one room, together, and I had the opportunity to observe them in action and talk, laugh, and interact with them during their breaks! For me, it was a PERFECT day.

Sherlock’s Star Trek Kitchen Audition

This is so awesome! Actor Benedict Cumberbatch (aka the new Sherlock) auditioned and scored a part in the next JJ Abrams Star Trek by auditioning on his iPhone in a kitchen over the Christmas holiday. Can’t wait for the upcoming Sherlock episode and to find out what evil one Cumberbatch’s going to play in Star Trek…Could it be Khan?
