Dorktales: Classic Storytelling with a Geekish Twist

Geek Club Books: Dorktales

The Three Little…HOGS? Who has ever heard of that? According to Mr. Redge, it’s a classic tale from the fairy tale cannon! According to Percy, “It’s epic, man!”

It’s the first of an original script created exclusively for Geek Club Books by Karen Simpson Gardiner with audio recording and editing by Michael Meyer.

Mr. Redge and I are the “storytellers” and we share the classic tale of three little pigs…I mean…hedgehogs. I voice all the characters:

  • Porky, a goofy, lovable hedgehog who builds his house of straw
  • Percy, who’s more amped about surfing, dude, than building, so it’s sticks for him
  • Peregrin, the uber-brain who knows how to use a rapier and outfox a wolf
  • And, the wolf who is just doin’ his wolfy thing

SimCity and the Improvising Simlish Audition

SimCity

My most difficult audition to date was for this newest release of SimCity. When my agent sent over the specifications, the production team wanted recordings of 11 character archetypes each with a range of moods–happy, neutral, angry and scared. And the kicker? It had to be in Simlish, an emotion-based language that does not include English or any foreign language words.

And…no script. Every line had to be improvised. But…I needed to include some Simlish words already established (There was a list attached).

I took my time. Learned some Simlish. Rehearsed. Wrote my own sentences in English, something each archetype would say and translated them into Simlish. Rehearsed. Then went into my home recording studio and went for it!

As with all auditions, you do your best, send it off and what will be, will be. Typically you find out pretty quick when you get cast but I think a month or so passed before my agent contacted me to say that I was one of the voice actors selected for the next SimCity.

Wobs! And yibs, yibs, jiboo! I exclaimed! Who’d of thought I’d have an unchie chance in hakibab to get it.

Enjoy the new release and when you’re havin’ a convo with someone in SimCity, you may just be talkin’ to me. Dag dag.  🙂

Les Miserables or Les Miseranimals? Who Should Win the Oscar?

Granted this Warner Bros. parody of Les Miserables came out in 1993, but it was overlooked then and should be considered for this year’s academy award. 🙂

Runt Valrunt escapes the pound for stealing a bone to eat (but did he really?) and he is being tracked down by the ruthless Camenbert. Oh, and there’s a little Sweeney Todd macabre thrown in for grins.

The Biz…Voicing Peekaboo, A Children’s Book App

Peekaboo by Bacciz

During the Thanksgiving holidays, I ventured into the children’s book app world and created the voice of “Bacci” the goofy, friendly dog. Bacci is the “navigator” who helps parents and children through the ins and outs of the entertaining and educational apps created by BacciZ.

The company has been has been featured in Apple’s Whats Hot, Staff Favorites, TUAW, The Mac Observer, many educational blogs, and in Gizmodo as “Best Apps for Kids.”

Yes, while everyone else was preparing turkey dinner (with all the fixings), I was in the studio recording!

My voice appears on the recently updated released of Peekaboo, Guess Who?

Peekaboo! App by BacciZ

The app is getting great reviews! “Peanut Butter & Whine” blogger Connie Gruning, even mentions the dog:

“There is a cute little dog that appears from time to time blow kisses, hum or even snore if you are taking too long or the player has suddenly left the room…. ummm hummmm.”
