Goop Hog aligns with several components of the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) Framework with a particular focus on these five:

1 – Self-Awareness

Example: Throughout the story, Redge the hedgehog, demonstrates self-awareness when he reflects on his feelings of nervousness and disappointment. He acknowledges his initial hesitation to join the gathering at the campfire and recognizes his vulnerability.

Lesson: The story encourages kids to develop self-awareness by recognizing and understanding their own emotions, fears and insecurities.

2 – Self-Management

Example: After realizing their rush to judgement, the Stork Squad manage their reactions by apologizing to Redge and asking for a fresh start. They learn to control their initial fear and anxiety and replace it with kindness and acceptance.

Lesson: Kids learn the importance of self-regulation, empathy, and impulse control, which are essential skills for managing relationships and conflicts.

3 – Social Awareness

Example: The Stork Squad’s initial judgment of Redge based on his appearance demonstrates a lack of social awareness. However, as the story progresses, they gain a deeper understanding of Redge’s feelings and intentions, showing growth in this area.

Lesson: Kids learn to develop empathy and understanding for the perspectives and feelings of others, promoting better interpersonal relationships.

4 – Relationship Skills

Example: The story emphasizes the significance of building positive relationships by giving others a chance and making amends when misunderstandings occur. The Stork Squad learns to communicate openly and rebuild their relationship with Redge.

Lesson: Kids learn the value of effective communications, cooperation, and conflict resolution in building and maintaining healthy relationships.

5 – Responsible Decision-Making

Example: Redge’s decision to attend the campfire gathering, despite his initial nerves, demonstrates responsible decision-making. He chooses to overcome his fears and join the group.

Lesson: Kids are encouraged to make responsible decisions by considering the potential consequences of their actions and demonstrating resilience in the face of challenges.
